Privacy of New Media

Social media is definitely one of the highlights in the development of new media. Some of the most popular social media sites today include, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Messenger. Surprisingly the parent organization, Facebook, owns 3 out of the 4 that were listed. In recent news there has been lots of controversy regarding Facebook and the data privacy of its users. Facebook makes almost all its revenue from advertisement placements which leverages user’s data. This is what makes Google and Facebook superior when it comes to their advertising network. The controversy comes when users are not aware that they’re data is being shared and who it is being shared with. Some countries have even instated new laws to combat against this. The GDPR or the European General Data Protection Regulation, will allow users in the EU to regain control of their user data, by being able to opt out of sharing. However, one can argue that using users data provides better curated content.
