File sharing is simply the distribution of files through the internet, however, there are multiple ways that this can be accomplished. I have contributed information to the YouTube wiki, due to the fact that I use the platform on a daily basis. I also believe that it is one of the most important platforms to have come out of the new media age. YouTube is iconic in the sense that it serves both as a search platform and a social one for viewers and creators to communicate. In my YouTube contribution, I focused specifically on a channel called Yes Theory, which spreads a positive message for its viewers to face their fears and live their best life. Throughout the upcoming weeks, I will continue to contribute to the wiki in subjects that I am knowledgeable or interested in. One topic that includes is photography, in that wiki, I plan on talking about the Sony A7 camera line. Social media is definitely one of the highlights in the development of new media. Some of the most popular social media sites today include, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Messenger. Surprisingly the parent organization, Facebook, owns 3 out of the 4 that were listed. In recent news there has been lots of controversy regarding Facebook and the data privacy of its users. Facebook makes almost all its revenue from advertisement placements which leverages user’s data. This is what makes Google and Facebook superior when it comes to their advertising network. The controversy comes when users are not aware that they’re data is being shared and who it is being shared with. Some countries have even instated new laws to combat against this. The GDPR or the European General Data Protection Regulation, will allow users in the EU to regain control of their user data, by being able to opt out of sharing. However, one can argue that using users data provides better curated content.

New media plays a huge role in our daily lives, in the way we communicate with each other and share our special moments. As a college student, we mostly see new media as a leisure activity and never given much thought as to how it has improved the college experience. Club life is a huge part of the college experience that helps students find their interest. It would be greatly beneficial for Baruch college to create a website or app dedicated to showing highlights of school club events, by showing pictures and including a brief description. This would be greatly beneficial to new students that are still trying to find where they fit in, in a school with over 10,000 students.  In addition, the pictures shared can be easily posted to social media, which will allow for more promotion of club life at Baruch. Before I speak on how I use new media as an outlet for my creativity, I’d like to share how it has inspired me to do so. During my time in high school, I became a huge fan of YouTube and the wide range of content it had to offer, from Minecraft to music videos. But one Youtuber who really caught my attention was Casey Neistat. He was a filmmaker, but his videos didn’t have a crazy high budget or production, instead, it was the story he told. From that moment on I was inspired and decided to start recording videos on just my iPhone. As time went on, I decided to buy a dedicated video camera. It was YouTube again, that taught me how to edit my videos on Final Cut Pro and adjust my camera settings. I now create videos highlighting my travels and share them via YouTube. Creating videos has also motivated to step out of my comfort zone. During my travels I am now willing to go that extra mile or wait for the perfect sunset, just to capture an amazing shot. New media has allowed many individuals to create and share their creations. Websites, blogs and social media allows users to curate their own content and serve as a form of self-expression. In 2019 the most popular way of sharing one’s creativity with the world is definitely social media. It is important to note that each social media platform has its own niche and benefits. Instagram has a better visual feel to it than Facebook, so one can use that to share images. Where as YouTube and Soundcloud are better for music and videos.  Before new media came around, one had to share their ideas and creations through physical face to face interactions or endure long waits for shipping. In my opinion, the greatest benefit new media has brought to creatives is the ability to gain feedback from a range of people.
