P2P File Sharing

File sharing is simply the distribution of files through the internet, however, there are multiple ways that this can be accomplished. The method that will be discussed in this post is Peer to Peer file sharing. Peer to Peer file sharing is where a user with a file can host and share the files from their computer to whoever requests it. When I think of peer to peer sharing, I immediately think about books, movies, and music. However, an article from NPR’s article, Peers Find less Pressure Borrowing From Each Other, speaks about the potential P2P can have in the financial industry. Lending Club is a company that allows people to borrow and lend money. But the differentiating factor of this company is that lenders and borrowers can learn about one another and decided whether or not to do a transaction. This is the complete opposite of how a regular banking system operates. Lending club removes the bank and is able to provide borrowers with a better interest rate. This is a really great concept that should be more widely accepted.

I also believe that P2P plays a really important role as a college student. As a student myself, one of the costliest expenses after tuition is textbooks. P2P allows friends and students to share textbooks without ever having to meet in person. It is great because once downloaded, there is no more need to pass around the same book. However, in recent years P2P has been given a bad reputation for the sharing of pirated movies music. I believe that there is way more potential in this technology, and people should not be afraid to venture out and see what it has to offer.

  1. I 100% agree with you! P2P is one of the greatest inventions. As a college student, we often do not have a lot of disposable income to spend on textbooks but textbook companies know we need them so they take advantage of that fact. Most of the time, textbooks range from 100-400 dollars which is super expensive. P2P allows us students to share textbooks which is very cost effective. I know I have saved a couple hundred if not a thousand dollars in my college career by getting textbooks from other students!
