Blog: Social Networking Sites

Being a millennial, I would say that I'm pretty experienced with the top social media sites. My top four includes, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Linkedin. For me Facebook was what started it all, it was the first platform that allowed me to share my life updates, and message my friends. However as of  recently, it seems to be outdated by other social media standards. I now only log into Facebook to utilize the messenger feature. Instagram on the other hand is definitly one of my most used application. It allows me highlight some of the very special moments in my life with others. Posts on Instgram take a little more thought in comparison to Snapchat. My Snapchat is used for only close friends. Snapchat has created a platform for users to share spontanious and authenthic moments.
Lastly, there is LinkedIn, which is used only for professional connections. It is a great site that allows students and professionals to build their network and find jobs of their liking.

My idea for a new type of new media is a family application built for parents that like to keep connected with their children. This application will feature built-in group chat in addition to tracking, so parents are always aware of their child’s location. There is also the potential for it to be part of a network of family devices. Such as the ability to lock or unlock house doors with add on accessories. In the current market, there are apps that have these features but are offered by various companies. The differentiating factor of this new application is the ability to use all these features seamlessly in one app to provide ease of use.

Creativity and New Media

Before I speak on how I use new media as an outlet for my creativity, I’d like to share how it has inspired me to do so. During my time in high school, I became a huge fan of YouTube and the wide range of content it had to offer, from Minecraft to music videos. But one Youtuber who really caught my attention was Casey Neistat. He was a filmmaker, but his videos didn’t have a crazy high budget or production, instead, it was the story he told. From that moment on I was inspired and decided to start recording videos on just my iPhone. As time went on, I decided to buy a dedicated video camera. It was YouTube again, that taught me how to edit my videos on Final Cut Pro and adjust my camera settings. I now create videos highlighting my travels and share them via YouTube. Creating videos has also motivated to step out of my comfort zone. During my travels I am now willing to go that extra mile or wait for the perfect sunset, just to capture an amazing shot. File sharing is simply the distribution of files through the internet, however, there are multiple ways that this can be accomplished. The method that will be discussed in this post is Peer to Peer file sharing. Peer to Peer file sharing is where a user with a file can host and share the files from their computer to whoever requests it. When I think of peer to peer sharing, I immediately think about books, movies, and music. However, an article from NPR’s article , Peers Find less Pressure Borrowing From Each Other, speaks about the potential P2P can have in the financial industry. Lending Club is a company that allows people to borrow and lend money. But the differentiating factor of this company is that lenders and borrowers can learn about one another and decided whether or not to do a transaction.
